- The book starts off with Tom Joad a farmer in Oklahoma during the depression who just got back from prison.
- Tom and has family had been struggling to grow crops as the dust bowl was destroying all fertile land
- The Bank eventually seizes the farm from the family and forces Tom and his family to set out to california with his family and others in search of jobs.
- On the way to California the Joads encounter another family who have car problems named the wilson, who Tom decides to help out even though his grandfather passed away during the encounter.
- When the joads arrive in California they stop at the first camp where they began to talk to a man named Floyd who gets accused of being a communist for asking a businessman to offer the wage in writing which leads to an altercation and forces the Joads to leave immediately because they don't want any trouble.
- The Joads travel south to a government run camp where they eventually leave due to not finding work
- They eventually find work picking peaches for some money while people are leading a strike against the ranch.
- Tom eventually finds the leader of the strike but cops accidentally kill him and tom begins to fight the cop but he flees to the orchard as a fugitive with a broken nose who is later hidden by his family
- The joads leave the orchard and find work picking cotton with another family but a young girl from the other family gets in an altercation with another child and tells her older brother who is hiding.
- Toms mom then tells him to flee which he does and eventually follows in the footsteps of what the leader of the peach strike was doing.
- The book ends where the remaining members of the family find a boy and starving father in a farm where one of the women offers to help the dying man by breast feeding him
