The Grapes of Wrath The book starts off with Tom Joad a farmer in Oklahoma during the depression who just got back from prison. Tom and has family had been struggling to grow crops as the dust bowl was destroying all fertile land The Bank eventually seizes the farm from the family and forces Tom and his family to set out to california with his family and others in search of jobs. On the way to California the Joads encounter another family who have car problems named the wilson, who Tom decides to help out even though his grandfather passed away during the encounter. When the joads arrive in California they stop at the first camp where they began to talk to a man named Floyd who gets accused of being a communist for asking a businessman to offer the wage in writing which leads to an altercation and forces the Joads to leave immediately because they don't want any trouble. The Joads travel south to a government run camp where they eventually leave due to not finding work
